DOLOGNAWMETER® ASSAY

  

Preclinical laboratories seek an operant orofacial pain/nociception assay relevant to oral functions that elicit pain in patients. A dolognawmeter® is an automated device that records the time used by a rodent to complete a discrete gnawing task (gnaw through a polymer dowel to escape from a tube). Gnaw-time is employed as a behavioral index of orofacial nociception. Gnawing function in the rodent is comparable to masticatory functions that elicit orofacial pain in patients. No other assay objectively quantifies masticatory function and dysfunction in such a direct manner. Because the assay quantifies pain-induced dysfunction, it is more relevant to the most common clinical problems arising from orofacial pathologies - pain during function and restriction of function secondary to pain. Moreover, the device provides immense experimental versatility in a wide variety of preclinical models. Dolognawmeters® are easy to use in parallel because they are automated and fit into the housing cage. Dolognawmeters® will be commercially available soon.
